Cookies and Christmas. Just the words bring back so many memories. My memories of my grandmother, Momo, in the kitchen making cookies and treats for the Holidays.
For me it was helping mix the ingredients, rolling or shaping the dough into balls and putting them on the baking sheets. Taking them off the baking sheets when they were taken out of the oven, warm and smelling wonderful. Then the fun of decorating them and putting them onto trays or plates to eat or give away. The best part of all, Licking the spoon and the bowl!!
Rolling out Sugar Cookies, cutting them into shapes with the aluminum cookies cutters, shaped like bells, Santa and reindeer. You know the ones, they are light, and now can only be found in thrift shops or dusty old drawers. Those wonderful old cookie cutters, I still have them and do use them!
Then the fun begins. Frosting them and adding the wonderful little colored sprinkles. That part was fun also, trying to make them look pretty and edible. Knowing we would get to eat many of them as soon as they were done. Sneaking a taste of frosting, getting caught and scolded lol. I really am sure, not to many cookies made to the plates to be shared. My Grandfather would be right there also sneaking them off the plate to eat. He would get a light hand slap, and she would get a kiss on the cheek!
I miss those days and have tried to make cookies for my kids and grandkids over the years. And of course, the same thing always happens. Licking the bowl, tasting the frosting, messy hands, faces and love with laughter along the way.
Sugar cookies are not the only ones I remember, we had the wonderful powder sugar coated balls, we called them Mexican Wedding Cakes. They are oh so buttery and melt in your mouth. Those were always really messy to make with us kids. somehow powder sugar just gets everywhere!
